It would not be too early if you were in Europe or
I always try to go with something typical of whatever period I'm doing.
Extreme examples might require that I break character to explain them, which
is why I do this. If you're not playing a character this is less important,
unles you run into some purist with a rude streak.

What about tea dyeing it? Depending on the strength of the pink, you could
end up with an interesting color-- brownish pink, or a pinkish brown. And
tea has the "advantage" of dyeing (staining) while cold, too! Or try wine.
