Power adapter may be bad, or the charging/power circuit inside the
laptop is toast..
If it won't run plugged into the wall, that's not good news.

I have and have had XP Pro SP2 boxes with a weird bug related to the
power settings icon in the systray. Normally, one can pick the power
setting scheme by a single left click of the icon in the systray. The
