I'm about to pay $20 for a url for a two-year period.
Is there any reason not to do this via whois.net? This is a .org url. Can
those be claimed for free? If so, where is the best place to do that?
Thanks.
you mean a domain name registration? Try Godaddy.com

Likewise. I tried some of the other domain registrars, but GoDaddy gives
you more features for a reasonably low price.

I never understood why using the Whois privacy feature is any more
'legal' than using any other non-personal address. Either way you are
hiding the true domain owner's address and phone number.
I registered my .org domain using the contact address and phone number
of the registrar.

not anymore. Godaddy is fine, 11 has their own also, I could use it
