Allow me to add, as an historian of British mandatory Palestine, that "Palestine" was common usage until May 1948 - and the British then meant all its citizens. Thus, "Palestinian" could and did refer to Jews and/or to Arabs. Professor Monty N. Penkower A Note from the Moderator:

While I appreciate David's lesson in political geography and Jewish pride, the encyclopedia is neither a geo-political work nor one that strives for re-asserting ancient titles. It simply uses a term that was in common use throughout many centuries right up to the early 20th century pre-mandate

Lee Jaffee's thoughtful "take" on the treatment of "Palestine" in this encyclopedia is a welcome alternative view to that of David Elazar, who want's to eliminate Palestine as a geographical entity. Amazingly, this is indeed a free resource, from the intro .

I have a different take on this issue. I think the JWA's new online encyclopedia is a great contribution to Jewish studies and its merits far overshadow any political considerations. I did a search for the term "Palestine" and reviewed the first 40 or so entries. As far as I was able to see,
