Can someone inform me the major reason why the Hurd does not yet

Because you haven't implemented it. :-)
I think the lack of audio support is a very large drawback. How
large effort is needed to enable audio, via e.g alsa?

You don't use mount on GNU/Hurd, you use settrans. So instead do:

Not sure if you got my reply to your last question or not, but here's some
thoughts on this one. I'd take that --readonly out of there, and also
tack on a -s. The -s will start hurd in single user mode (as you need to
do in teh *manual* installation. Even if you do'nt need to do
I refuse to give up on installing GNU/Hurd.
I have followed the instruction to the letter. I reboot and am
given a choice from GRUB as to what to boot: Ubuntu or GNU/HURD. Upon
choosing Hurd, the initial scripts begin and then the machine reboots.

uppermem was the trick! I have 1GB and with 512KB it works fine.
Since more than 512KB is not unusual nowadays I'll suggest to the maintainer of
the HOWTO to add this .

I tried to install the hurd on a Debian GNU/Linux box
on a logical partion /dev/hd5. Grub recognises it at (hd0,4)
and finds /boot.gnumach.gz.
The hurd is under /gnu. It was installed using debian-crosshurd.
I am able to boot Linux from Grub. /boot is on (hd0,0)
I followed all instructions
then 512 MB, try to
limit it in GRUB via the uppermem option (I think).
Maybe somebody else knows what other stuff you could try.

but the biggest problem with the Hurd wiki is the GnuSkin, which I'm
the author of. It too needs upgrading before the wiki can be upgraded.
So, the short answer is that it's in progress but goes very slow.

Still, if it complained (not necessarily halted, a warning might be

Infact, I often just format all my filesystems with "hurd" as the
creator just so that I can use translators where I need them.

You don't need to call `getcwd ()' since you used `get_current_dir_name ()'
so you can enclose this `if' in an "#ifndef _GNU_SOURCE" or some such.
And then you can send it to the xchat maintainers. :-)

Here is a small patch to be able to compile xchat on the Hurd. Since I
don't personaly use python plugins in xchat, I'm not sure it really
works, so it'd be nice if someone using such plugins could try it ;)

I have run too HURD, but i have one problem.
My menu.lst from grub:
