Good morning all,
Which is the best rotary microtome for routine tissues and biopsies? No
plastic only paraffin. I am leaning toward retracting, but is there a benefit
to non-retracting microtomes?
Thanks in advance:)

Can anyone give a reference for this change in IHC billing. I'd like to have it

In the summer of this year, ASCO/CAP issued new guidelines for proper handling
of breast specimens to improve the accuracy of ER and PR status. It states that
the fixation of breast specimens must extend for at least six hours and no more
than 72 hours. It stands to reason that these guidelines
Hello Histonetters,
I have just received the microtome aligner tool from TechOne that Newcomer has.
I have used it on my three microtomes and let me tell you guys, I LOVE IT!!
It is very easy to use, just follow the instructions that come with it. I
strongly recommend it (but that's just my o

What I have done in my lab, is make up a control block of different tissues and
run a vimentin stain with the new detection kit. Then I pull the slide from the
previous lot number and compare the two, and document that they are the same.
I keep all the validation slides from both detection kits
I recently mentored an employee who took and passed the certification test. We
did use Freida's book but used questions from ASCP's study guide book to

Hi Paula,
We did the same thing with our coverslipper, venting to the ceiling and out. We
also had the stainer vented out through the ceiling and this helped
dramatically. If you do vent your stainer though, you have to remove the
charcoal filter, as the filter actually prevents the fumes from
Kim wipes work great, and if done after each block shouldn't slow things down
much. Besides, what's the point of quantity when the quality is compromised
with floaters. You should have a policy regarding this since it is a CAP

Hi Barb,
We have metal sleeves in which 18 cassettes fit standing front to back, and a
metal box with lid which we fill with formalin. This box holds 6 sleeves and as
cases are grossed, the cassettes are picked up in order (it doesn't take any
effort to do this at the time of grossing) and plac
Hello fellow Histonetters,
I was wondering if anyone is running Biocare's Amyloid A or Amyloid P
antibodies on Ventana's Benchmark. If so, are you using the concentrated or
predilute antibody?
Also, are you running these alone or with a Congo Red stain (as in a panel)?
Any information is great

Hello Histonetters,
I wanted to know what institutions in Illinois are doing as far as block and
slide retention. I believe the guidelines that came out recently say 10 years.
Our facility, as I'm sure others do, want to hold them longer.
Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated.
