It was probably more problems with the master servers. Its supposedly part
of Valve making the Friends feature of Steam that they broke about a week
after it started working and never fixed. Funny enough though is that Xfire
has probably remove any need for the feature all together.

Ummm not really, I have had that problem on this my now 3rd OS and 5th
Motherboard/CPU/Video combo. Every single install has had that problem.
Prior to Source though it only made a difference in how fast it would
download updates. I stared using Steam the day 1.6 came out.
