rcon version gives me
Exe build: 20:06:30 Mar 7 2006 (3421)
by doing some calculation with turning it back and forth from epoch it
will give me a date (using the timezone America/Los_Angeles, since I dont

That number is the number of days since HL1 was released. We don't really use
it any longer, internally we use perforce changelist numbers and externally we
use Steam depot versions. Still, doesn't hurt to have it lying around.

Build numbers are often calculated... This way it will never be the same

This is how some calculate the builds...
( Year - 2000 ) * 1000 + ( Month * 50 ) + ( Day )
With this forumula we would get the build number for todays date
(2006-06-29) to be 6329.

Or when they introduce a new bug or fix a feature. :)

I'd hazard a guess that it's the build number. I'm not sure when Valve
increments it, but I would expect them to do so whenever they introduce
a new feature or fix a bug. Since quite a few of the builds are internal
and/or licensor-only, the updates to the Source/Goldsource engines we
get via Stea
