I'm currently looking at 1U rack mount systems to host some TF2

At the moment, a system with a quad core Xeon X3220 2.4GHz CPU seems to
be optimal. Would it be possible

I thought the Core 2 processors (can't find the name of the quad
equivalent) were better on power consumption than Xeon processors. As
far as I know, even the quad core AMD's are better on power consumption
than Xeons. Someone correct me if I am wrong please... :)

Actually, the technical difference between Xeon and Core 2 is minimal.
AFAIK, a Xeon is slightly better than the equivalent Core 2 Extreme, but
I haven't done much research.

They are both named Core 2. The 2 core versions are named Duo and the
4 Core versions are named Quad ;)

As far as I know the socket 771 Xeon does use about 40% less power then the
775 ones.

Running 1 TF2 on each core is the best you can do, and it shouldnt be

Make shure you got plenty of memory !
Thanks Peter. I have an 18
Ok, I wasn't aware of that, in that case you probably won't find
anything better for power consumption currently available.

From wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xeon#Dual-Core_Xeon)
Just comparing 3Ghz procs:
3085 xeon has a TDP of 65W socket 771
5160 xeon has a TDP of 80W socket LGA775
Core2duo E6850 has a TDP of 65W
