everything else (gameserver files) to a new CPU type server (Athlon64), one
that supports SSE2..and, no more
I may be out to lunch, but isn't a PIII 500 well below the minimum
requirements for TF2, even for the server?

Try a verify with
steam -command update -verify_all -game tf -dir whatever your dir is
