Thumb rule:
F-side
1st slide about 8-9 mms
2nd slide about 7-8 mms
3rd slide 10-12 mms
BB-side
all a bit less (1-2 mms)
This is right mostly, but check careful about the combination 12 on the Bb-horn for
the high a2. Fine adjustings helps a lot for a secure a2.
Greetings

Who's we?
Ain't me.
Why do we have to adjust our slides as you describe?
The horn stays the same.
We are what changes.
That's why we warm up.
Dave,
The address you just sent is the address I have
been using. No replies in the past three weeks.
You did say he was going to be out of the shop
for a while, but I thought I waited long enough
before I started sending my letters. After all, he
has been posting to the list, so I presumed
I just measured. I'm feeling somewhat validated, because
mine were not far from these measurements.
However, can it be that all makes of horn are (about) the
same in this respect?

Hi Scott,
I'll remember this as I play Joseph . Dreamcoat
Hello All:
I've been following the Beta Blocker - Audition Nerves thread that's
resurfaced in the past few days. I have no personal experience with
taking medications to overcome audition-phobia, since I hadn't taken an
audition since 1975 (and blockers didn't exist way back then!)
. But
I thought my Yahoo email address was subscribed to the Yahoo list but it was
not, but I did upload the Lawson tuning guide to the Yahoo hornlist so take a
look there if interested.

Well,I seem to recall reading that Farkas would make a show of adjusting his
slides while the orchestra was tuning up, then just before playing, place
them right back where they were..anyone know if that was true?

SCott, if you were in a professional orchestra, you would adjust your horn according
to the given a2 of the oboe. It is nonsense to play the same note on the horn. One
must tune the horn with an interval. So the best note (a note which is good on both
sides of most horns) should be the concert
Too bad horns aren't tuned at the factory like the
trombone owned by the fellow who sits next to me in our
orchestra!

Once I had a student in a master class on a very well known music academy. He was
technically very skilled but played aweful out of tune permanently. I instantly
understood, why he was out of tune. The main slide was pulled out regularly (about
0,8 (2 cms about), but all slides were pushed in
I agree. I would also add an observation; in the case of many amateur horn
sections, I've often found it necessary to tune the horns to concert g1
ahead of the formal tuning. For some reason, my guess is weak lips, this
note tends to be horribly out of tune in these groups.

This is basically what I do to set and test my tuning -
1) adjust the main slides for the F and Bb sides for the 'c' in the treble
clef staff (c2, third space) - use an electronic tuner for this, then put
the tuner aside.
2) pull the valves slides out as Hans Pizka has suggested.

3)
Very simple, just transpose the whole process if you were playing a horn part in
E-flat.

Jay, if you say exactly the same, as I did before, I cannot understand, why some
people disagree with my proposal.
But playing through all the scales as you suggested, when will you do that? Before the
rehearsal or before the concert ? Then the embouchure will be worn before the concert.
