There are so many really interesting muted passages, almost too many to
list. One thing about muted ( versus stopped ) passages is the style, or
image that the passage evokes. For instance - Ominous, could be the muted
passage in Sorcers Apprentice - Dukas. Reverse echo, could be the muted

I have an interesting (and somewhat embarrassing) story to tell. I am a
senior at the local high school, and tonight was my final concert. One
of the songs we played was an adaptation of the Lord of the Rings
Symphony by Johan De Meij.

Well I must admit that it was fun being tested on my use of alternate
fingerings. I just wish it was a different sort of test... maybe the
kind where your teacher just asks you to do something on the fly (not in
the middle of a concert). One of the other downsides to this test was

Wouldn't it it solve the problem if you knew how to play the natural

Tim, I would venture to say that something similar has happened ALL of

Of course this is a great reason to know all your alternate fingerings

For whatever it's worth, we have always kept a copy of the Catacombs
section of Pines of Rome on hand so players could evaluate the extreme
low dynamic, low range qualities of the mutes we carry. It's one of the
passages that "separates the men from the boys", so to speak.

Hi everyone,
Horn players are still needed for the 2nd week of the Humboldt Brass
Chamber Music Workshop. It's a fantastic workshop, where you play all
day long, in a beautiful setting with great people. And it has what
we think is the largest brass music library in the world. I forget

Just a reminder that Nicholas Smith, Wichita State U Prof. did a
doctoral study on mutes about 15 years ago.

You might look up Dr. Gary Moege, at the University of Central Missour. His
dissertation was on mutes, and he would probably have additional cogent
information.
