Industrial strength epoxy glue especially designed for metal is generally
available at auto parts and auto repairs stores.
It is much stronger than the normal hardware store types.

However, the horn belonged to Mr Julio de laRosa, who auctioned the horn in

an Alexander 1103 is similar to a Geyer layout with the valves being in the
Geyer pattern, but the tubing configuration is Alex's own design and not the

No ,do not resort to wrenches or pliers.
You could use a thin leather belt- about 1/2" wide.
Wrap the belt around the ring, pull it tightly around the ring with your
fingers, and holding it in that position try to unscrew the ring.
Use light pressure and do not force it , but this gives

The screw rings on a E.Schmid horn are NOT soldered.
You might want to try some Wd-40 on the rings. Let it sit in the threads
for an hour or so and try removing them by hand again.

The reason I mentioned using a valve lever for winding the springs is that
you then have a guide for where to bend the wire so the spring will fit on the
lever and you can use the bracket arm portion of the lever as your guide as to
the diameter of the windings.
This way you are also ab

Springs can be wound by hand without buying any tools except a good pair of
flat nosed pliers.
In place of the$200 tool, use a valve lever and bend the spring around it.
It takes a little practice to get them wound evenly -but it works.

I am going to second Bob Osmun's vote.
The Holton is a good choice if it is in good condition.
Stay away from the cheap eBay horns- even with some of the advice given on
the horn line( by mostly amateurs) -those instruments remain poorly made and
have been aptly dubbed "I S O's"

Another aspect of ebay buying though that is often the major source of
problems, is sellers who have no concept of what is in good condition, working

instruments, some poor ones.
To condemn all horns made in a specific wrap because you happened to have a
"not so easy to play horn" of this type is simply sophomoric.
