I read with interest Peter's remarks on buying music in
Germany. Alas, things are no longer what they were in
the '70s. I was in Germany in October and was looking
forward to buying sheet music there. I hadn't been
there in twelve years and to my dismay found myself

I've often wondered why Othmar Schoeck's Concerto isn't
played more. It's a delightful work. I once heard
Barry Tuckwell perform Matyas Seiber's Notturno for
horn and strings. This is a gorgeous, brooding work
that I believe was written for Dennis Brain. I know of
no recordings of it. I've men

I think you're absolutely right to say that Beethoven
could have come up with music in the style of Punto. I
would think it unlikely, however, for two reasons.
First, the general impression I get of the genesis of
the Sonata is that it was a rush job. Beethoven didn't
have time to write out a pi

The latest issue of BBC Music has a cd which features
concert suites that film compsers made from their film
scores. The first is Bernstein's "On the Waterfront".
I'm not sure who is playing first in the BBC Symph.

There seems to be an assumption that the passage in
question MUST have a big horn presence. To that end,
it has become common practice over the years to
re-write the parts Beethoven's has left us and, leaving
nothing to chance, even to bring in extra players. Yet
a quick look at the score reveals
Did anyone hear Saturday's broadcast of
Goetterdaemmerung from Bayreuth via the CBC? It was a
great afternoon marathon--four hours of Wagner! The
orchestra played with remarkable intensity.
Stunning! The lead horn should have had a mention but
