I have a book at school The Schubert Song Companion or some similar title. Each
of his 600 plus songs gets about 1-2 pages of background and some analysis.
One of the appendixes (appendages?) categorizes by key. I will try to remember
to bring the book home and share a few of its insights.

If this is so, then neither absolute pitch nor perfect pitch would have
much to do with it.

I recently played (for fun) the wonderful Auf dem Strom. The pianist

was happier, I was happier, and the pianist had no problems. I don't know
what Schubert would have thought, but if your pianist can handle it, I
I've played it in both keys, just going with what the singer has worked up.?
But I have to say that it is much easier in E flat!

I've played it in E, Eb, and D, depending on the singer's range. It
works well in all those keys. Most lieder can be transposed to fit the
singer's range...probably the composers expected that. The biggest
transposing challenge is for the pianist.

You're correct. When I wrote that, I really was referring to playing it

That's right. I've done it on a horn crooked in E/A and the fingering was easy.

Alas, Yes. The original Auf dem Strom calls for horn in E. However there
are versions with the work transcribed down a half step to E Flat, and down
a whole step to the key of D. And I have heard of an arrangement in the Key
of C, to accomodate a low voice. Thus I would not be surprised if a

Good call! Auf dem Strom was originally written for a tenor,
specifically Ludwig Tietze, who sang it at its premier on March 26, 1828
with Schubert himself at the piano and J.R. Lewy
While not specified in the score, Schubert premiered this piece with

occurred within months of the composer's death.
