I think this is known as advance fee fraud. The assistant walks off with the goods and the extra cash, and you find that the check bounces even though it is the kind of check where the bank intially credits the value to your account immediately. You end up without the horn and without the extra

Please pardon the dual posting. I have uncovered a possible scam using our favorite site, hornplayer.net. I currently have a horn for sale listed on that site. I was contacted by a potential buyer named, Helen Howard. She wanted to pay me several thousand dollars more than I was asking
