There is again a confusion between partial & natural tones. The
numbering starts with the fundamental , if we go for the natural pitches
(tones), but starts an octave higher, if we go for the partials

one point (in the first movement at rehearsal 15 in third horn), I
was called upon to play a pedal b-flat, the one immediately below
middle C. My fourth horn partner in crime joined me in this at the
octave below.
It occurred to me
Boy that's for certain, Hans. I won't forget the first time I played the
Wind Quintet of Schoenberg I had to do it off a part that was horn in C in
bass clef for the entire part pretty much. This was the way Schoenberg wrote
his score, and the copyist just copied what he/she saw. Nasty!

isn't it a possibility that the notes you played were notated in bass
clef because the notes in the 4th Horn were very low, and both parts
were written by the composer originally on one stave. As the 4th part
