"easy/user-friendly" as the panorama photo software people have on
their smartphones and P&S cams, that shows them the first frame and
guides them in aligning the 2nd

Add a "Learn" tab to hugin.
There is no doubt that learning hugin can be a challenge.
Part of it is that creating a panorama means shooting first and then
processing images with hugin.
