I found the reason:

Hi Paul,
We use java also.
Especially since you can point SMPJHOME to something bogus and get the same
result, I would suggest checking to make sure that the DDDEF (or the JCL DD
card) and the pathname match and that it is mounted and that you can list the
directory in your hsf/zfs.
I can suggest Tivoli solutions.

Jason,
I have used the following in SDSF where jobnamepattern is a pattern for
job names that you want to affect.
/$CJ(jobnamepattern)Cancel
/$PJ(jobnamepattern)Purge
For instance, to cancel all jobs starting with JG:
/$CJ(JG*)
There is also a user ID parameter.
Thanks again for everyone's help. If anyone cares, here is the assembler
program that reads the spanned file and creates a fixed length 136 byte file
padded with blanks where necessary. I don't claim to be the best assembler
programmer. I hope that worked in my favor in keeping it simple. But I
Hi Don,
Well said. I am not against change. But, at least in the land of the
mainframe, our careers focus on making and implementing changes that work, not
just to the developers' satisfaction, but to the satisfaction of our
customers. In this case, we are the customers. As long at SR is
Hi Timothy,
Case #1: Business as usual.
Business as usual has already been taken by the budget woes.
Case #2: Minimize the cost of overnight operators as much as possible

Quite a deep hole SSA's dug itself into.
Interesting "According to a project plan released in August, the

four years", given increased mainframe efficiency and higher storage

All,
Just came across this today. PTF UA59179 to add SUDO support in USS
required GID(0) just to install it. I opened a ETR with IBM. The PTF
runs a script to do a CHGRP & CHOWN to UID/GID (0). Seems the port from
open source into USS requires GID (0).

That's a good way of explaining the issues. I agree.

This looks like it might be an issue on the Java side then. I don't want

connection?
RESTRICLOWPORTS should only apply to whoever opens port 514 for
listening, not whoever connects to it.

If you want to log messages from your Java application to the UNIX syslog, try
looking at this:

I even understood it, so it must be fairly simple!

Thank you all for your help… To explain a little further…
I have a TCP/IP Socket port open to receive information and I am
attempting to write messages to the SYSLOG daemon (UDP port 514).
I have written this process in java.
Java gave a lot of error messages but the only one with meaning is

They are not against change. It has been their job to implement change.
However, the change had to be non-disruptive to business.
The migration from PCP in 60's, to MFT, to MVT, etc. to z/OS today was 50

I agree with Jim. Most of IBM's 'simplification' efforts have kept in mind the
experienced SYSPROGs and tried to give us the opportunity to maintain the touch
and feel of the old ways while giving the newer folks the touch and feel of the
web-based apps. So far I have seen each change in the ETR
Christian,
You made this comment in one of your emails:
SR processes roughly five times the service request volume of ETR today and is
designed to support a common IBM business process and customer work flow.
My comment to this is: So what if it handles 5 times the request volume if it
is unusab
This is certainly do-able. Please be aware that migration
coexistence/fallback support is not available.
Whatever technique is used to migrate from 1.7 to 1.11 will be required
in the reverse direction if needed to go back from 1.11 to 1.7
That being said, download all of the migration guides (1.7

Hi,
We are currently in zOS 1.7 and we plan to migrate to 1.11.
Is there any hindrance or complication to do this migration in one shot ?
What are the requisites and measures to take before this type of migration ?
Thanks very much.
