I was affect as far back as 1990, working for a bank.
We used 4753's, which were PC/AT's with a channel to channel connection.
And, you could only do 50 security calls per second.
I think one chip on a z/990 can do almost 12,000.

In our case it's the PCI (Payment Card Industry) i.e. VISA requiring
protection of card numbers that is driving our interest (as well as the
large $$$ penalties for not complying.
