The messages are still send to the hardcopy log
(SYSLOG or OPERLOG).
IIRC, there are options to suppress them from SYSLOG and OPERLOG, as well.
I recall a SYSPROG who did that to me almost 20 years ago.
I believe the options were:
SYSLOG(y/n)
and:
OPERLOG(y/n)
