I thought the compression took place in the control unit, so the full amount of data went over the escon channel, and was compressed by the hardware before writing or reading. How does that triple the effective tape rate to 27MB/sec. over the escon channel? Over ESCON it does not, which is my

Well, it's very old technology. If you have the channels on the processor, add one, the cost of channels is probably the largest item. You could probably add another A50 and a pair of B11 drives for very little, the shipping, installation and maintenance will exceed their value. -

I thought Escon was about 17 Mb/sec and the B11 drives were 9 Mb/sec. True, but the 17MB/sec on the channel is the maximum instantaneous rate; the max effective rate after channel turnarounds and CU-channel control exchanges is rarely more than 14MB/sec, usually less. On the tape, the max s

I thought Escon was about 17 Mb/sec and the B11 drives were 9 Mb/sec. We have 2 A50's w/ 2 ESCON each with B1A drives, one has 4 drives, the other has 2, all in the same 3494. There isn't much difference in dump ET to any of the 6 drives, there a slight advantage to the A50 with only 2 drives,

I'm sure that two escon channels would greatly speed up your backups. I had a similar experience at P&H Mining around 2000. We got 4 3490E drives, and 1 controller with 2 escon channel interfaces. That was 16 transports for 2 channels. I think the backups actually took longer than with 24 34
