Unless you have major issues with software running on the latest release, I would always recommend the most current available, when upgrading. And, this would include all software, not just the OS. - Too busy driving to stop for gas!

Going to the current release also depends on how far behind you are. If you're farther than N+2, you can't upgrade more than 2 releases and still be supported. If you are currently at 1.6, you can't go furthur than 1.8 and remain supported by IBM. Chances are you won't having any problems
