Hmm. DIAG '64'x would return rc=174 if it were the paging i/o error. RC=203 indicates that you have attempted a function (a load in this case) and the virtual machine host primary address space was in the shareable state. OK I see it is due the fact your are running this virt machine v=r.

As I think about this problem it reminds of something I saw ages ago. New box wouldn't IPL; turned out it was something to do with 2k/4k pages - told you it was old. I'm not suggesting your having a 2k/4k issue! - but - maybe there is some funky microcde - some obscure setting in the hardware?
