Hi to all,
We're soon to be a z/VM shop with LINUX as guests. We are looking to
implement VSWITCH layer2 support using OSA3. Is it recommended to share
the VSWITCH OSA with the TCPIP stack or use separate OSAs. Must they
belong to the same subnet or network? What would be the recommended

z/VM will give you access to the linux virtual machine's hardware console.
There are a number of choices here, including OSA-ICC, and tn3270 via
z/VM's native stack. Network design often parallels that of other
environments, for example VMWare on blades or standalone servers with a

It's hard to answer without knowing the network topology or security
policies. z/VM can be on a different subnet or network than Linux (or of
course the same one). I would say in general it's best to separate z/VM
from Linux by either using a different OSA address or a different VSWITCH

With the advent of OSA-ICC and the integrated 3270, the need for a separate
osa for vm tcpip has been reduced to one of preference or policy, not
necessity.
Just be sure that it is properly configured to keep vm tcpip out of your
production workload networks. It is a server management interface
