You can use a saddle as a surcingle but you need to raise and anchor
the stirrups.
I really do prefer to use a saddle and stirrups because too often the
surcingle rings are in the wrong place. I hate it when the reins tend to

For several years I've been doing my long line driving with a very nice set
of soft cotton longe lines. They're really way too long. I end up trying to
manage big loops of extra line in each hand, plus directing the horse and
keeping my aging feet under me.
