In my experience upgrading Ubuntu always seems to create some sort of
trouble, while clean installation proceeds nicely. Trade-off between
carrying your settings and not being locked out of desktop login. ;-)

my personal experience too.(I have never had one that lasted 3 years!) Of
course they are faster than other storage. Windows guys even introduced a
'feature' to use pendrive as swap space to increase swap speed.

What if he OP is trying to write script that does something with USB disks?
If it's his own system he can ignore n number of disks he has. But for
generic script it won't do. dmesg is the best bet.
