I disagree. First step is let them use few good tools (preferably GUI) and
let them know that FOSS can produce better tools than proprietary ones, then
let them know how FOSS works(philosophies) and then teach them command line
tools and then go into hard part of they themselves installing and
troubleshooting stuff.

What you are suggesting is I need to first learn how to assemble a computer
before I can start using it. (Why not start with micro-electronics & chips?
even better! ;-)
