When I had my beloved original Apple Imac bondi-blue, I found 8.6 was better
for me than the 9 - I had maxed it out on RAM, and found it played many games
that it was not supposed too.

paper towel and carefully clean the key caps with it, then soak a
clean paper towel in isopropyl alcohol

Just to clarify. No intel based mac can run classic. It requires a ppc based
mac. If something is Universal Thats different. But any pre os x software
can not run on an intel based mac.
The exception is sheepshaver which will run up to OS9.0.4. I've done this on
a windows machine and a linux
