As mentioned, there was quite a confusing opening starting at
1520UT. Signals would fade up quickly to barely audible and then
disappear again. So lots of carriers heard with traces of audio,
but also several CNR1 signals dug out by aid of parallels
pretty darn good audio (all of it
I don't know Gary. That was a pretty strong reception of HLCA by
Victoria standards. I recall that you heard Asians pretty well when
you listened regularly for them, and that you usually heard Chinese
and Koreans better than I hear them in Victoria. There's this big

During December's trip to the west coast of the Big Island the TP-DX
propagation was radically different from the watered-down version currently
being tolerated on the west coast. Instead of a few Asian big guns reaching
modest audio each morning there were wild DU-TP snarls every evening,
Thank you for the info, Marc.

Hi Guys,
During antenna testing this morning I had an unattended 8" FSL set up to record
972-HLCA throughout the sunrise period, and it came up with some fairly strong
Korean female vocal music at 1512 UTC. I don't know what the signal was like in
Victoria, but this mediocre location sometimes

FYI, this station has also been heard by a friend of mine in Newington, CT.
All he hears is music, no announcements. He hears it at night. I'm not sure
if he has checked during the day.

My start was in Northern Wisconsin at a summer camp in 1951. I lived in Des

tent mates was from the Chicago area, was a Cubs fan and wanted to see if we
could hear the games at night on WIND, 560. Of course, then, we
Next time I am on the road near NYC, I will be sure to keep the car
radio tuned to 1710.

Hi Les,
In the past as today, this station plays music most of the time and
seldom has any voice. Also, the station is as weak as my Spanish, so I
might miss an ID even if they gave one.

Stan,
Hmm…my first guess would be the pirate station in Baton Rogue, LA that gets out
very well at night. It’s Spanish language, and they rarely identify. But a
daytime reception over that distance would be unusual.
Maybe a Spanish language pirate from NYC? I remember there was one in
We lost power here for about 30 minutes this afternoon, so what did I
do? Chop wood for the fireplace? No, I got on the radio!
Logged six new navigational beacons on LW and then I moved over to the

There seemed to be a boost around 1520UT for about 10 or 15 minutes,
and there was mostly quite sharp changes in signal strength; very erratic.

The NRD525 revealed quite a few audio and lots of hets upper band.
As Nick has suggested, a KAZ antenna will be better than an end-fed Ham
