Gary DeBock-- if you're reading this can you try 1710 and let us know
if you
hear the station in your Puyallup valley location? It's not even close to
being in audio here.
Hi Guy,
As I recall, when the 1710 Russian was first discovered (and many of us
were investigating the bearing),
It is 0855 PST and the Russian 1710 is still coming in very weakly with
music, barely above threshold. A stronger carrier though.

Thanks Pat (and Chuck Tom also) for your comments. Now I'm really puzzled
at the station's absence here! I didn't tune ECSS to check for a het, just
tuned past the frequency each time in AM mode. I was using my AOR receiver
rather than Perseus so I couldn't see any activity on a spectrum or
Guy,
Even though my NE EWE is tiny (15X40X15), it still does well for the
Puget Sound stations. I just tried and the Russian on 1710 is going
strong (weak here tonight), with a woman in RR and RR music.

At 0530 utc tonight I tried for the Russian language station on 1710. Since
a number of folks have mentioned hearing it easily, I figured so should I.
Nope! *Barely* a scratchy het is heard, and Perseus shows just a 4 or 5 dB
S/N at the most. That's on the best of four antennas available, too!
I noticed this morning off the NE EWE at 1200 EDT 1600 UTC, that there
are two stations on 1710, both seem Russian. I checked the Eastern
beverage and no sign of it, so it doesn't sound like the Vancouver WA
one. Are there more than one in the Puget Sound area? One is stronger
than the other.
Patrick,
I will check tonight on 1710 kHz for the Russian stations that you
heard this morning. The Vancouver Russian station is still on the air.
On 1710 kHz now I have a carrier with a level 4 signal. Have never heard
them at this location. I'll be heading for Beaverton, OR today and will
Hi Dennis,
Thanks. I get the idea, both signals are in the Puget Sound I am getting
as I only hear them off the NE EWE. The Eastern Beverage doesn't get
them.

The Seattle Russian station on 1710 is unusually strong this morning,
playing male chorus religious songs, weak, around 1400 utc.

Usual fade up and down signal here on the coast. I have gone by 1710
often and it is a regular here. I still here the carrier during the
middle of the day off the NE EWE.

It's been a while since anyone has mentioned anything about our Russian
station. I'm listening to it now, and it seems to have drifted up slightly
from previously
noted frequencies (used to be just under 1710 as I recall). Tonight, I'm
measuring it on 1710.004 at poor to fair level at 02:02
Walt,
The Seattle area Russian station on 1710 is fair at times tonight at 0415 utc.
Signal fluctuates a lot from nothing to fair. Noise level here is S-3 and their
signal peaks at S-5.

The 1710 Russian is pretty good reception this evening, with little fading,
0430-0450 utc, weak/medium on peaks. Apparently I am the farthest to hear it
so far; Dennis calculated about 250 miles.

This morning I drove from home in NE Tacoma through downtown to the
Proctor district and then back up I-5 to Federal Way and then due
West to home again and did not hear anything similar to what Pat
heard. Rather, I heard the additive mixing product of KIRO-710 and
KOMO-1000. Gary, you
Pat,
If the Russian station on 1710 was in the Yakima area, your eastern beverage
should be able to received it?
Yakima is a little NE of Seaside. If I don't go out driving around looking for
the station tonight, I will
aimed the ewe in the NE direction and see if the signal improves.
Hi Pete,
Thanks for your detailed investigation.
It's obvious now that the 1710 carrier around the Tacoma-Puyallup area is
some kind of mixing product, and not the mystery Russian station that
Patrick, Walt and Steve have been hearing. Your explanation of KOMO-1000 and
KRO-710 sounds
Pete,
Thanks for the report. Interesting. No one seems to find a local signal
on this one. I wonder a trip from Centralia to Mt. Vernon would find
it? There may be some small group of Russians in a small town in
Western WA too?

Dennis,
Yes, you are right there and I also get Spokane on the Eastern beverage,
so it still points to the Puget Sound area.
Thanks.
