I have downloaded the latest source version of James
and it compiles fine. I don't have admin privileges on
my machine, hence I had to change the config of James
so that its SMTP server runs on a different port,
other than 25.

Btw, can I use James with ASP.NET? or others but Java?
Nope, James is 'Java' Apache Enterprise Mail Server
Would be cool though to have a port..

The Application / Data-Store I am talking about is a legacy - very large
EDI transport engine (thousands of connected nodes). We are attempting to
add an SMTP transport to the existing product. The product behaves very
much
like a mail system
Would it be better to do integration by having

Three quick questions:
1) Does NNTP auth work with db user repository? It doesn't work for me.
Yes, NNTP Auth uses the same user repository as SMTP/POP3. If db user
repository works for POP3, it should work for NNTP. Suggest

Am I crazy? I welcome advice, suggestions etc.
It is a good idea, btw. as a data point.
Brightmail does something similar, ie. tries to collect spam mail and update
filters in 'real time'.

Reading the documentation, I understand (am I right?) that if a James
service is configured to use TLS with the useTLS element, it will accept
*only* TLS connections.
You can have multiple listeners per protocol.

You mean I can write several smtpserver, pop3server etc blocks in the
same config.xml file?
Yes, but you must
- give each block a unique name and say smtpserver1, smtpserver2 etc.
- have corresponding block

related to S/MIME?
You should be able to do PGP with BC. The cryptographic primitives are
there.

Crytix is old and reputed, but my favorite is Legion of Bouncy Castle(BC) at
www.bouncycastle.org. I have spent some time with both and found BC better.
BouncyCastle has a good community and turnaround. It seems more compliant
with JCE and PCKS standards. BouncyCastle supports SMIME and that may

You could hard code one in your insert statement or use the java to
encode it.
Some thing like the following java or maybe it might possible to encode

Hey David,
Do you know of some clients that support STARTTLS. I use outlook express and

It seems like something worth doing only if it is widely

Here go my results.
James 2.1a1 resists 3 mail per second but crashes at 4. Unfortunately,
the memory leak looks bigger in 2.1a1 than 2.0a3.
Memory is freed periodically, more or less every 6 minutes.
That may be because
James provides Mail Server functionality and you seem to need Mail Client.
Try JavaMail from http://www.javasoft.com/products/javamail/index.html
