Sometimes old drives do have these problems. My last one got to the point
where it couldn't burn anything, and only read CDs about half the time.

Since it seems inconsistent ... I'm sorry to say that your drive is probably
faulty. And since you're on a laptop, I'm guessing the drive is built-in and
that it isn't something you can easily open to
