It appears that the only way to accomplish this is with drag and drop,
at least in this version of Firefox.
I found nothing in the program or a web search to show any provision for
saving a website shortcut

nothing selected on the desktop. I'm definitely going to save these steps

I also have Windows 7. This should work.
Press the Windows key and arrow up once to "all Programs."
Press enter, then when a list appears press the up arrow key once.
Then press f until Firefox appears.
On hearing Firefox verbaliz
o "send to submenu," press enter again.
Then press the down arrow key until you hear "Desktop" and press enter yet
again.
