This is not always the case Mark. Windows Updates do not always have the
most current drivers. It is best to go to the manufacturer (HP in this
case), and look for drivers under
it so responsive. We think a lot of
Vista users will be pleased when they install JAWS 9.

There is no reason to update your audio drivers. The people that need to do
this in Vista will know it. It is way to painful to use when using XP Audio
drivers in Vista

As Michael pointed out, you should start with looking for an updated Audio
driver on the Sony site. You can try Narrator on the machine and I suspect
you will see the same sluggish audio response when typing which verifies
