The Hibernate code is actually an implementation of a Store, but I agree, the
namespace has become somewhat confusing.
I'm just giving Mike some elbowroom to do the store stuff, once he's done I
will do some cleaning up before adding the Hibernate Mailbox implementation.

ill-conceived, and I won't even address the polito-technical issues involved

persistant cache ( ie. writes to the disk ) or a cache that is replicated
entirely in memory. I'd like to persist a subtree of the namespac

You could declare a custom Realm in a WEB-INF/context.xml file.
But why would you need to use the Security Filter project? With JAAS is more
