I know I am probably repeating questions asked in the past, but I have been
looking for some days now at getting it working and finding a solution.
I seem not to grap what needs to be in the mysql-ds.xml and portal-mysql-ds.xml
I named my datase jbossportal, created a user jboss with

Did what you suggested and changed the my.ini.
No results! Meanwhile I also tried it with the jboss-portal-2.2.1RC3-bundled
but same problem. By the way I am using the
mysql-connector-java-3.1.12-bin-g.jar .
I also notice I get the next messages:

I just downloaded the zip file from the download area.

Thanks for the reactions.
I started the installation all over again following the next steps.
Downloaded mysql-5.0.19-win32 AND installed MySQL.
Created database jbossportal.
Created user jboss with password portal
Assigned all priveleges to this user.
Downloaded jboss-4.0.4.CR2.zip

I just deleted the hsqldb-ds.xml from the directory.
Should it remain there ?
What should be the jndi-name? Should it be PortalDS or DefaultDS?
Why is startup giving errors on the deployment ?

Just found a topic in the JBoss user forum that talks about the same error:

The person who raised the issues says it has to do with the data source names

Steps I took now are:
1. Removed the mysql-connector-java-3.1.12-bin-g.jar from the bin directory.
2. Put back the mysql-ds.xml which I found in the docs/examples/jca directory.
3. Made sure the portal-mysql-ds.xml is correct
