After searching a little bit around in my test-XEmacs i have found
(exec-installed-p "tex.exe"). This seems to be the equivalent
of executable-find. The difference seems to be that exec-installed-p
must always be called

I do, because in my emacs-20-7.tar.gz source-distribution
(Gnu Emacs 20.7) is in lisp/progmodes/executable.el the
fuunction 'executable-find'.
