I found this javascript method :
navigator.javaEnabled()
it sends back true, if java is enabled.
I didn't make extensive tests, but to know if it works,
one can try to type in the adress bar
"javascript: alert(navigator.javaEnabled())"
and see what's coming on !

Please be on the lookout for mouse bugs, particularly on older JVMs ... IE
with MSFT JVM, and Win32 Netscape 4.*.
I did not have a chance to test any of this on MacOS 9. Someone please try
out IE and Netscape

I tried viewing some Jmol applet pages on a new installation of Windows XP
Professional with Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 SP1, in which all Microsoft
critical and recommended "Windows Updates" had been done.
Jmol failed, displaying as a white rectangle with a little red X in the
upper left corner
