Additionally, you could open a terminal at the location of your local files
and start a python local web server with "python -m SimpleHTTPServer" and
navigating to localhost:"the port terminal outputs, 8000 on my mac"
(without quotes) in your browser.

When running from local files (not from a server) I get this in Chrome
but not in Firefox. Try using Firefox.

Just a reminder from previous posts. To run files locally in Chrome, you have
to start Chrome from the terminal:
MAC
open -a /Applications/Google\\ Chrome.app --args --allow-file-access-from-files
For Windows, I think it's:
chrome.exe --disable-web-security
