I should add (in case it somehow matters) that I am still running good old KDM
as a display manager. As far as I know it won't even start a Wayland session
without some kind of hacking, which I haven't done

I saw one perfect restore after updating to that version as well, but my next
login had the same jumbled session restore. My one good restore was just after

Also, the NFS version involved here is 4.2; NFS3 is not involved at all. It
shouldn't matter at all, but we use kerberized NFS (sec=krb5p) and the servers
are all running RHEL7.4.
