Didn't work for me - I really have to kquitapp kmail and start it again several
times. Without a network connection, this often doesn't go away at all - quite

I have had a the same problem in Kubuntu 12.04 along with KDE 4.8.3.
A workaround that seems to work so far is simply restarting one or a few times.
