Thanks, so the problem appears to be that a feature is missing from the
guest's precise kernel, which was present in the saucy (13.10) kernel.
Could you verify whether using the LTS backport kernel packages in the
precies guest fixes the issue?

DiagonalArg - if you are willing we can do a bisect between
Ubuntu-3.2.0-60.91 and Ubuntu-3.2.0-64.97 in order to isolate the
offending commit (of which there are 378). I suspect a stable update has
