I noticed that the repo now has kernel 4.4.0-93 available- i tried that
but it did not work either - it also seemed to set SMT to 8 which caused
me a few problems until i realized what it did.
I rebooted with kernel 4.4.0.94 and all is well again (after I set SMT
to off)
