OK, I downloaded and ran the WD Firmware Updater for Windows. It said
the firmware on the drive was up to date, but I carried on anyway.
The drive still doesn't appear in Dolphin when plugged in to the USB3
port.
The output from the hdparm command (drive plugged in to a USB2 port,

Please provide a direct URL to your e-mail to the mailing list once
I'll do that. Thanks for your help with this.

Hmm, I wonder if I'm being a bit stupid here... Am I supposed to
download and run the linux-headers file or the linux-image file, or
both???
Sorry about this, we're definitley pushing the limits of my experience
with Linux/Ubuntu here...

Since my last post I actually read the instructions (!) - sorry, should
have done that first.
I installed the linux-image file, but unfortunately I still cannot see
the WD drive in Dolphin.
I hope I have added the tags correctly.

AndrewS, could you please execute the following in a terminal and post the
results to this report:
sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdX
where X is the letter of your external hard drive.
As well, could you please provide the full model of your external hard
drive as noted on the drive itself?
** Changed
When I run that command, I get the message No such file or directory.
However, as the drive isn't mounted when plugged in to the USB3 port, I
re-ran the command when I plugged it in to a USB2 port. This is the
output:
sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
ATA device, with non-removable media
AndrewS, could you please update the firmware of the drive to 3.2.5.1 as
per http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=223lang=en and
advise if this changes anything?
If it doesn't, could you please post the results of the following while the
drive is plugged in:
sudo hdparm -I
OK, I have tried to install the package at the following link:

headers-3.14.4-031404-generic_3.14.4-031404.201405130853_amd64.deb
The file downloads but I get an error message saying that Dependency is
not satisfiable:
