Paul, If you want real Varnish then you are out of luck in one of the Big Box home stores. You will have to order Spar Varnish from a Marine Supply house. Real Varnish is going to be more expensive. If you put a coat of Epoxy on your wood surfaces then you need at least 3 coats of

Ok so not to beat a dead horse here but the products that you purchase in any Big Box are NOT Varnish but are Urethane / plastic finishes. Ace used to sell a true Oil based Varnish till last year and they have now stopped. Thanks to the EPA and other folks Varnish is rapidly disappearing.
