Mark, To Calculate how much your Aluminum Speed Brake will weigh use the following: Calculate the volume of your part by multiplying length x width x thickness Then multiply the sum by .105 Which is the density of aluminum plus a correction factor for fabrication (rivets, primer, etc.) Once you

I have searched the archives on "aluminum speed brake" and only got eight results. I am going to install an aluminum speed brake with three rows of 3/4" diameter holes. I am planning on a 9" x 36" size. My question is...what thickness 6061-T6 aluminum should I use? The only reference I have

Very good info Scott. However, after I drill the holes, round the corners and possibly reduce it to 6" wide instead of 9", the weight should be more than cut in half. I am sticking with the 1/8" 6061-T6 which will have a lot less complexity and faster to build. Besides, I already have the aluminum

Mark, I'll not address the thickness for you to use as Scott has posted a very extensive analysis of the various qualities of each. I will however post this on the net, instead of as a private email. Solid rivets can be set using a piece of flat stock steel and hammer. Hinges on my current
