I read somewhere that the square footage of a wing is what you would get if if you stripped the upper surface off and laid it out flat. So it is always a little more than the chord x span. -Eric in Mpls

Eric - The airfoil and hence the curvature neither the thickness of it has any bearing on the wing area for aerodynamic calculations. In other words, simply calculate the area of the polygon traced by the wing to get the wing area. Don - MAC is a weighted average of all cord lengths on a semi-span
