Ok, here is a definitive workaround for this problem, i think this work
for everybody :)
As said by "lvscar" for GDM, we must impose KDM to restart Xorg on
relogin/switch to terminal instead to simply reset it. In Kubuntu by
default, xorg is resetted, allowing a more rapid kdm reload, but by now

I encountered the same problem, including icons, window decoration and
even wallpaper.
There is a forum post discussing the same phenomenon, and the temporary
solution is to change it from an opened window (right click on the title
bar and configure window behavior from there), it works for me.

Thanks very much for this workaround. I haven't had a clean shutdown on
my ati-card-having laptop in months, and this ought to help a lot.

In my continued research on this problem, I have found two very similar if not
the same bug in #46557 and #48318.
One of which indicated using "AlwaysRestartServer=true" for GDM in
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf. Ubuntu gdm.conf recommends entry in
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom which over-rides gdm.conf. That
me too. i've run into this problem (i've an hp laserjet 1000). with breezy was
all right.
with "foomatic-cleanupdrivers" the problem is solved... that is: it installs
the printer, but it prints anything...

Using GDM here, too.
Tried franceloc's modifiv=cation to the kdmrc, then switched login
managers to kdm.
Still got lockups, regardless if using KDE or Gnome.
Tried no display manager. Machine booted, got to a tty login prompt,
logged in and did a "startx &". Had no "default" desktop set so XFCE
Is this exact lockup problem only on Ubuntu?
I've been searching the web haven't seen it elsewhere.

I'm having the same problem as well - but only since the release of Amarok
1.4.0 - with older versions the streaming was fine. I still can play radio
streams with Kaffeine but not with Amarok.

I'm using Ubuntu Dapper with the latest updates as of yet.
When I'm typing an e-mail in KMail, the typing speed slows down after
typing two sentences (or whatever). It's so slow I have to close KMail,
restart it and resume typing where I left off.
tried franceloc's method..
seems to work
1x logout
2x reboot
1x shutdown
and no lockups so far.

I used to have no issue with breezy+ipod. Now, KDE seems to ignore the
ipod entirely. It doesn't show up in media:/ like it used to, and the
new ipod:/ kioslave isn't working, either (I simply get an empty
folder). As suggested by amaroK, 'dcop kded mediamanager fullList'
doesn't list the ipod eith
Please add my vote to "please fix this bug." I dist-upgraded from
Kubuntu Breezy, and a number of my personal configs got stomped.
There is no Midnight Commander profile on either of my Kubuntu systems.
A manual fix was posted for this on the Kubuntu forums at

I would disagree with "Severity - Normal". This bug can cause crashes
when upgrading from Breezy to Dapper and render the system a pairtially
upgraded mess (as it did on mine - thank goodness for backups). Complete
OS mutilation ranks just below filesystem mutilation in my book.

Same problems as above. Upgraded from Kubuntu 5.10 to 6.06 (64 bit).
Generally runs and boots fine. During boot up kdm randomly dumps out to a
console login (tested at about once in 4 - 5 reboots in succession).
Xlog files looked normal. Found 'kdm_greet' messages (as above) in syslog.

Here's the same thing without any handholding, in hopes it helps with
