When I first tested it did not work. I was running nm-applet at the same
time, so I killed that and quit knetwork manager, then restarted
knetworkmanager.
That made it work.
Now I just have to figure out how to stop nm-applet from loading.

One more confirmation of this scenario. Kubuntu 8.04.1.
For what it's worth, I run kppp as my normal user to make a bluetooth dialup
connection. For the rest of KDE to notice that there is a gateway available I
must quit knetworkmanager. Then it all works fine. I have not tried kppp as

in to it, KMail crashes.

2008-09-28 and this wishlist seems to have been implemented. I see
